Accessible Materials Made Right #2: Structure and Appearance, part 1 Version 2
This course will address text considerations for documents you and/or your school or organization creates. In particular, the focus for this course will be on fonts, font size, headers, underlined text and hyperlinks, and other layout structures we add to documents to communicate information. The purpose of the Accessible Materials Made Right series is to increase awareness of what makes digital content accessible and why it really matters, as well as to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to begin creating accessible documents. This series will focus on using intentional planning and design to help people who would not otherwise be able to access electronic content. Everyone benefits from accessible design. The curb cuts at crosswalks and buttons that automatically open doors are features that have been developed to give individuals with disabilities access to places that would otherwise be inaccessible to them. These features also benefit people, with and without disabilities, when pushing strollers along a sidewalk or trying to get into a building with their arms full. The same holds true when we make digital content accessible to all users. For some people, digital accessibility is necessary for them to receive the same information that others can readily see, hear, or understand. For others, accessible design makes content more readable, understandable, or navigable.
